Sport at Sandgate

Interschool Sport

Interschool sport is divided into Junior (Year 7 - 9) on a Tuesday afternoon, and Senior (Year 10-12) on a Wednesday afternoon.  Students have the opportunity to engage in a range of different sports in two seasons during the school year. They play against schools in the Central District region, and can advance into Metropolitan finals in specific sports. Sandgate is always strongly represented in all sports by both males and females where we showcase our sporting talent to our opposition.  Sports include but are not limited to Touch Football, Cricket, Basketball, European Handball, Volleyball, Softball, Netball and Football.

Any students not selected or not wishing to compete at the interschool level participate in our school sport rotations. A variety of sports are offered and student’s form class groups that rotate through those sports every 3 – 4 weeks. This is purely aimed at participation and physical activity, so all students can participate in a supportive, fun environment.

Below are just a few of the extra-curricular opportunities Sandgate offer to our students for sport.

Vicki Wilson Cup

The Vicki Wilson Cup is a state wide school girls Netball competition run by Netball Queensland offered to both public and private schools. Schools play off in regions to narrow down to a final 70 teams that play in a weekend finals series. Over 150 schools compete; with Sandgate placing highly in the last five years, particularly in 2012 where they placed 2nd in the state.

Super Sevens

The Super Sevens is for Year 8 and 9 Netballers to compete against schools in the Brisbane North region. The competition started in 2012, with only Sandgate, Narangba Valley, Wavell and The Gap involved. It has now grown to a full day carnival once per Term with 6 – 8 different schools involved.

At Sandgate District State High School volleyball is offered as an extra-curricular sport. The volleyball program has been in place for 14 years. It is known as the IBIS volleyball program. Students involved in the volleyball program have the opportunity to go on tour to compete locally and interstate. Competitions students participate in are Queensland Volleyball Junior and Senior Schools Cup, National Volleyball Schools Cup in Melbourne, Dragons Volleyball Flaming Chalice and The Gap invitational competition. Students train weekly for these competitions and enjoy playing for the school.

Rugby League

Our Rugby League teams play in a variety of extra-curricular competitions.  Rugby League has a long and proud tradition at Sandgate High and has seen players such as Jayson Bukuya and Ricky Nalatu progress to play at the highest levels. The Grade 8 and 9’s play in the Broncos Challenge play off day held annually at Mitchelton RLFC.  All ages play in the local Aspley-Broncos Challenge against Metropolitan North schools.  In 2014 the Opens team will play in the Tier 2 Gee Shield competition played across South East Queensland.
