General English, English as an Additional Language and Literature are all subjects sharing common features that aim to develop students' knowledge and skills in listening, speaking, reading, viewing, designing and writing. Each course involves students in the analysis and creation of a range of texts. The courses develop students' ability to function as independent and creative learners and thinkers. They involve students applying the aesthetic features of language purposefully, analysing perspectives embedded in texts, and articulating their own perspectives in compelling ways.
In General English, students focus on the study of both literary and non-literary texts. Teaching and learning develops student skills in analysis and comprehension of literary and non-literary texts and the creation of persuasive, analytical and imaginative texts.
In Literature, students focus entirely on the study of literary texts. Teaching and learning develops student skills in analysis, appreciation and comprehension of literary works as well as the creation of varied literary texts.
In English as an Additional Language, teaching and learning is delivered by expert teachers who apply strategies to support students for whom English may not be their first language or the primary language spoken at home. The subject develops student skills in analysis and comprehension of literary, non-literary and pop-culture media texts while enhancing students' understanding and application of Standard Australian English. Entry to the subject requires parents to complete an eligibility statement to determine student suitability.
All of these senior English offerings are highly academic subjects requiring deep understanding and appreciation of language. They are best suited to students with well-demonstrated knowledge and skills in the subject of English who are on an ATAR pathway.
