Year 7, 8 and 9
At Sandgate District State High School, students are taught the Australian Curriculum at Year Level.
Year 10
Year 10 students engage with the Australian Curriculum at Year Level. During Term 4, students consolidate and extend in preparation for Senior Mathematics in the subject of their choosing informed by SET Planning.
Year 11 and 12
At Sandgate District State High School, all students must study mathematics in Year 11 and 12. Students may select essential mathematics, general mathematics, or mathematical methods. Student choice should be guided by their demonstrated ability in junior mathematics, university or vocational pathways and interest in the subject.
Essential Mathematics
Essential Mathematics is an applied subject that develops students into thinking citizens who interpret and use mathematics to make informed predictions and decisions about personal and financial priorities. Essential Mathematics is an applied subject suited to students who are interested in pathways beyond Year 12 that lead to tertiary studies, vocational education or work.
In this subject, students complete two Problem Solving and Modelling Tasks and two exams.
General Mathematics
At Sandgate District State High School, all students must study mathematics in Year 11 and 12. Students may select essential mathematics, general mathematics, or mathematical methods. Student choice may be guided by demonstrated ability in junior mathematics, university or vocational pathways and interest in the subject.
General Mathematics is a general subject designed for students who want to extend their mathematical skills beyond Year 10 but whose future studies or employment pathways do not require calculus. It incorporates a practical approach that equips learners for their needs as future citizens. Students who choose this subject may go on to tertiary studies or employment opportunities in business, education, industrial technology, science, commerce, finance, and the arts.
In this subject, students complete one Problem Solving and Modelling Task, two internally set exams and an External Assessment.
Students must be consistently achieving a satisfactory standard, C or better in Year 10 Maths to enrol in General Mathematics.
Mathematical Methods
At Sandgate District State High School, all students must study mathematics in Year 11 and 12. Students may select essential mathematics, general mathematics, or mathematical methods. Student choice may be guided by demonstrated ability in junior mathematics, university or vocational pathways and interest in the subject.
In Mathematical Methods, a general subject, students engage with topics in algebra, functions, relations and their graphs, calculus, and statistics. A course of study in mathematical methods can establish a basis for further education and employment in the fields of natural and physical sciences, especially physics and chemistry. Mathematics and science education. Medical and Health Sciences, including human biology, biomedical science, nanoscience, and forensics. Engineering, including chemical, civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering, avionics, communications, and mining.
In this subject, students complete one Problem Solving and Modelling Task, two internally set exams and an External Assessment.
Students must achieve an A or B standard in Year 10 Mathematics to enrol in Mathematical Methods.
Specialist Mathematics
At Sandgate District State High School, all students must study mathematics in Year 11 and 12. Students may select essential mathematics, general mathematics, or mathematical methods. Student choice may be guided by demonstrated ability in junior mathematics, university or vocational pathways and interest in the subject.
Specialist Mathematics may be studied in addition to Mathematical methods. Through the study of Specialist Mathematics, students will learn about combinatorics, vectors and proof, complex numbers, trigonometry, functions, matrices, mathematical induction, complex numbers, calculus and statistical inference. Specialist mathematics can establish a basis for further study in mathematics. Studying Specialist Mathematics can lead to employment in the fields of science, all branches of mathematics and statistics, computer science, medicine, engineering, finance and economics.
In this subject, students complete one Problem Solving and Modelling Task, two internally set exams and an External Assessment.
Students must achieve an A or B standard in Year 10 Mathematics to enrol in Specialist Mathematics and study Mathematical Methods.
